Sky Show Tonight: Biggest, Brightest Full Moon of 2008

Don't expect to spot an Apollo lunar lander. But tonight, weather permitting, sky-watchers around the world will see the biggest and brightest full moon of 2008.

Although a full moon happens every month, the one that rises tomorrow will appear about 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than the other full moons seen so far this year.

That's because our cosmic neighbor will be much closer than usual. The moon will be at its closest perigee—the nearest it gets to Earth during its egg-shaped orbit around our planet.

At its farthest from Earth, the moon is said to be at apogee. (Find out more about tonight's perigee and watch a moon-facts video in National Geographic News's space blog, Breaking Orbit.)

Perigee and apogee each happen generally once a month, but the moon's wobbly orbit means that its exact distance at each of those events varies over the year.

The moon's phase can also be different during each apogee and perigee.

"Typically we don't have the full moon phase and perigee coinciding at the same time, so that makes this event particularly special," said Ed Krupp, director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California.

What's more, tomorrow's event will be the closest lunar perigee since 1993, at 221,560 miles (356,566 kilometers) from Earth.

The moon's farthest apogee for the year will occur a couple weeks later on December 26, when the natural satellite will be 252,650 miles (406,601 kilometers) from Earth.

Highest Tide

Because this unusually close perigee is happening during a full moon, it is expected to have an effect on Earth's tides. (Get more moon facts.)

"While high tides happen each month when the sun, Earth, and the moon are aligned, there is going to be an enhanced effect, with the moon being the closest it's been in more than a decade," said Ben Burress, staff astronomer at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California.

"This would result in extra-large tides in regions that are susceptible to them, like Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy." (See map.)

Features in the Bay of Fundy create a sloshing wave action that, in the bay's funneled and tapered basin, give rise to vast tidal ranges.

But even in such places, the effects of perigee are often modest, in most cases measurable in inches. But perigee tides can be higher if there happens to be a storm surge at the same time.

Observing the effects of perigee on the moon itself can be a bit trickier. Most casual observers may only notice a difference in the moon's brightness, Burress said.

The moon's apparent larger size might be most noticeable as it rises above the horizon at sunset.

That's when an optical illusion usually comes into play that makes the full moon seem larger—set against familiar Earthly objects—than when it's higher in the empty sky.

"This combination of the moon illusion and close perigee gives sky-watchers a chance to see the biggest and fullest moonrise possible," Burress said.

What makes this event particularly nice, the Griffith Observatory's Krupp added, is that everyone around the world can witness it without the need for special equipment, just clear skies.

We went last week had a very nice meal, we had a reservation and were seated promptly, firs a few random remarks

what You'll find, shrimp salad, smoked mackerel, salmon, herring, roast beef, turkey, assorted cheeses and salads (including goat cheese), tomato salad... and that's just a little of what you'll find on the cold line! On the hot side you've got smoked pork,General Tso's chicken, meatballs, braised cabbage, red potatoes,BBQ beef, lamb.... well, you get the idea. There are enough vegetables on the buffet to keep vegetarians happy, and enough meat selections to satisfy even the biggest meat and potato man...ME

1. THE VIEW is amazing ocean waves crashing 20 yards from your table, just incredible for $24 each its very reasonable
2. nice jazz duo, but live music is really not my thing but i still tipped them, hey its the season
3. perfect eggs Benedict, my wife liked the French Toast alot
4. nice carving station of Turkey,Ham Roast Beef & and a great Texas smoked brisket
5 raw bar was oysters, loxes,clam on the half & snow crab all you want
6. a couple of great chicken dishes, fish,and bbq beef ribs that are made to order instead of the typical scooping your meal out of a buffet buckets, they bring you any item you ask for off the brunch menu
7. the service was attentive and the place was 60% full, We had a nice table along the window
8. the place is BYOB so we brought a nice bottle of champagne and enjoyed our meal with some bubbles
coffee was served with one of my favorite New Orleans breakfast treats - beignets, not as good as Cafe Du mond ...but it was a very nice touch

Next time we will bring a large group and camp out with some great wines all afternoon...lol

dessert bar was your typical mix of made on site cakes and some other smaller pastries that tasted like they were made elsewhere bakery items

We will return, it had my folks talking about the old days when the Sea Girt Yankee Clipper was our favorite brunch spot years ago...the view is even nicer than the clipper and the food was much better than I remember it being at the Yankee Clippier

final thought if you are looking for a great setting and magnificent views low key, no rush atmosphere this is the place for brunch. Matisse is a wonderful choice,But if you are looking for mounds of food served like your at the brunch at Short Hills Hilton you may wish to look elsewhere. We really enjoyed the food, the no rush atmosphere, the crashing waves on a budget! with before tip the total for 6 of us was $160.00 with tax

I am always looking for these smaller type brunches than the normal wedding leftovers served by most big hotel brunches. please post about other Monmouth county area brunches...does mcclonnes? in Sea Bright have a Sunday brunch ?

Chef Wall has over 25 years cooking and catering experience. In 1998 he was voted one of the top six chefs in the United States, and in his early days, he beat Chef Emeril Lagasse in a New Orleans Food Competition. Chef Wall assisted Steve Wynn in opening restaurants at Bellagio in Las Vegas and Beau Rivage in Mississippi. He was executive chef at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan for 10 years. Prior to New York City, he was employed at Hyatts in New Orleans, Hawaii, and Chicago. Chef Wall has also been featured in "Cigar Aficionado", "Food Arts", "Success" and "Hotel & Restaurant News".
